Nasinu residents demand action as uncollected waste poses health and safety risks

Residents of Nasinu and neighbouring areas have been dealing with the overwhelming effects of uncollected green waste that has been left on the road side for months which has detrimental effects on the health of residents.

For months, residents have raised concerns about the growing piles of rubbish scattered along roadsides and green waste left abandoned in public areas.

Despite their repeated complaints to the authorities, no action has been taken, and the situation has only worsened.

A shop owner in Tovata expressed his frustration, saying that even though he and others have continuously reported the issue to local authorities, nothing has been done and has started to affect traffic and create safety hazards.

During a recent parliamentary sitting, Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa had highlighted that while visiting towns across Fiji, he was informed that many landfills had reached their capacity, stressing the need for new ideas and innovative solutions to manage waste more effectively.

In the meantime, the people of Nasinu are anxiously awaiting a plan that will bring relief to their community before the situation spirals further out of control.

We have sent questions to the Minister for Housing, but have yet to respond.
