The Nasinu Town Council has total rate arrears of $11.3 million, and Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar is encouraging those who can pay their rates to please pay their dues.

Kumar says municipal councils rely on rates and other levy collections to deliver services to its ratepayers.

The Nasinu Town Council has about 11,819 official ratepayers with an annual population growth rate of 2%.

Kumar adds that it is a mammoth task to run the affairs of the Council when some ratepayers do not pay their rates on time.

Meanwhile, the Minister has also confirmed that preliminary works for the Narere Swimming Pool and the Valelevu Stadium have begun.

Kumar has also confirmed that the Rakiraki Market will be officially opened once Fiji is declared COVID free.

She adds the government will continue to support progress and improve people’s standard of living.
