A family in Nadele in Sabeto, Nadi is still in shock after losing a 5-month-old baby boy and his elderly grandparents in a house fire early this morning.

Donald Dayal says when he reached the house this morning, it was engulfed in flames and he saw his sister crying outside.

Dayal says his sister lost her son in the fire.

He says they tried to break down a door but the smoke and heat from the fire was unbearable.

The house was occupied by a couple, their parents and their two children and they were asleep when the fire started.

According to the National Fire Authority, the couple woke up when they realized there was a fire and immediately went to rescue their father who was bed-ridden and it was unfortunate that they failed to rescue him and their mother.

During the rush to escape, their second child who was 5-months-old was left behind and the fire was too intense for the family to rescue the baby.

NFA says they are working with the Police to conduct investigations to determine the cause of the fire and circumstances surrounding the death of the three family members.

Neighbours say the fire started at around 12.45 this morning.

The family is taking shelter at a neighbour’s house at the moment.
