Motivate your friends to do good, resist the temptation to succumb to peer pressure or use harmful substances, steer away from violent behavior, and avoid causing harm to others and remember no one respects bullies on our playgrounds, and stealing is disrespectful and is a crime.
This was the message shared by President and Chief Scout, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, while addressing the Northern Division Scouts and Girl Guides Commissioners and leaders at the Scouts Hall in Labasa.
Ratu Naiqama emphasized that the Scout and Guide values of patience, courage, trust, obedience, and comradeship are highly commendable.
He says these values play a significant role in shaping the character of young people, helping them become noble leaders and exemplary members of their communities through stewardship and volunteerism.
The President also highlighted the importance of volunteerism, noting that volunteerism is about selflessly giving your time, energy, and skills to help others without expecting anything in return.
He says the organized Scout and Guide 'good deed' program teaches humility, compassion, and resilience and by serving your communities through voluntary work, you learn the value of empathy and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges others face. He added that embracing a spirit of service helps young people build strong leadership foundations, enhances their teamwork and communication skills, and fosters a sense of civic duty and national pride.
The President says as emerging leaders, they must understand that through volunteering, they not only uplift others, but they also grow as individuals—more aware, more responsible, and more committed to positive change.
He says to the Scouts and Guides Commissioners and Leaders of Districts, Provincial troops, and groups, I thank you for your service and sacrifice in mentoring and guiding our young people.
Ratu Naiqama says they will grow to become selfless and resourceful future leaders of their villages, communities, districts, and our nation.
There are currently there seven Scout districts in the North with an annual enrollment of about 2,300 members, making up about a quarter of the 13,000 Scout membership Fiji-wide.
