More than 67 percent of adults in Fiji are overweight or obese, and the numbers continue to increase.

Minister for Health Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu revealed the alarming statistics during the Launch of the Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling Workshop at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Dr Lalabalavu says these are not just statistics—they are warning signals.

He says they are witnessing a public health crisis that demands action from every sector.

He also says our problems commence from our children to adults, and that number is increasing as the years pass.

The Minister adds they met for this workshop with a common mission: to create food environments that support—not undermine—wellness, choice, and the prevention of non-communicable diseases because right now, the reality is stark.

He adds that this workshop marks a crucial move from awareness to accountability.

Dr Lalabalavu says front-of-pack labelling (FOPNL) is not about adding more information—it is about delivering the right information in a way that is visible, understandable, and immediately useful to everyday consumers.

He says it helps people quickly see what is in the food they buy—especially nutrients of concern such as salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats—so they can make better decisions for themselves and their families.
