Tailevu Provincial Council Chairman Semi Matalau

A call to have more Members of Parliament rather than having more Ministers and Assistant Ministers has been made by the people of Tailevu.

The call was made by the Tailevu Provincial Council Chairman Semi Matalau, during the consultation on the three Electoral Acts hosted by the Fiji Law Reform Commission in Nausori.

He says members of Parliament should be monitored based on how well they perform their duties on behalf of the people.

The Chair also stressed the need to change the single constituencies to various constituencies that could represent all races and all the people in this nation.

Matalau says he believes the old system had a fair representation of all.

He says when people talk about Parliament, they are talking about fair representation of all communities and all people in Parliament.

The Chairman also highlighted the need for ballot papers to be numbered because election officials or the Police cannot monitor the movement of papers before they reach the count station.

He also recommended manual counting rather than electronic counting because of the glitch that occurred during the 2022 national elections.

Matalau stressed the need for the reinstatement of the Senate as they play an important role in Parliament.

The Tailevu Provincial Council Chairman says they were not aware of the consultation happening and urged the Commission to improve their communication.

The consultation continues today at Nakorovatu Village Hall until 2pm and at Naqali Village from 3pm to 6pm.
