Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong confirmed that the Ministry is working on fixing electrical issues at the Navua Hospital that resulted in overloading of the electrical network causing power failure.

Dr. Fong says Navua Hospital has been a difficulty from the beginning which was also highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad and will be part of their minor works program.

The Permanent Secretary says another thing that is happening in Navua that is being faced by other major hospitals is that the electrical network is under-powered to meet the ongoing demands.

He further says as they are bringing in new laboratory equipment that the electrical network cannot handle which is what caused the fire at the Labasa Hospital.

He says before Navua Hospital came up into the limelight, they had issues with its sewerage system which had been undergoing some changes.

Dr. Fong further says part of their minor works program is to fix the electrical network and sewerage within all the major hospitals.

The Permanent Secretary adds works are already underway at the Labasa, Navua and Levuka Hospitals and there is an ongoing rolling plan for the rest based on assessment by their Asset Management Unit.
