A 64-year-old man was injured and two homes in Niudamu, Nakasi have suffered damages after a mini-tornado ripped through the area yesterday afternoon.

Niudamu, Nakasi resident, Asgar Khan has told fijivillage News that they experienced strong winds at about 2pm yesterday for only about 30 seconds.

Khan says his neighbour had fallen because of the strong wind and was injured.

He says 5 families are without electricity as their powerlines have been damaged.

The National Disaster Management Office received a report of severe destructive winds in Nakasi yesterday afternoon.

NDMO says the 64-year-old man who sustained minor injuries was treated at the Nakasi Health Centre and later discharged.

The Fiji Meteorological Services has also confirmed the event as a "small/mini tornado" based on their observations of the damages.

NDMO says they are closely working with all relevant stakeholders to assess the impact of the situation on the ground and provide assistance where necessary.
