May 14th is not just a day of the arrival of the first indentured labourers in Fiji but also the day when Sitiveni Rabuka committed the coup of 1987.

Minister for Education, Premila Kumar stated this while while responding to the End of the Week Statement by Government MP, Alvick Maharaj on the contribution of Girmityas in Fiji.

Kumar says every Girmit celebration should always remind the descendants of Girmityas the atrocities of the 1987 coup.

The Minister for Education says people left Fiji because of instability and insecurity caused by Rabuka and the only reason why people are coming back is because of the stability and security provided by the FijiFirst Government.
