A man who stole copper from the burnt Gokals building in Toorak has been handed a suspended sentence by the Suva Magistrates Court.
Samuela Nakalevu pleaded guilty to the charges of burglary and theft.
The 29-year-old stole copper worth $70 on the 2nd of September at around 11am.
He was arrested on the same day.
Nakalevu’s counsel told the court that he takes full responsibility for the crime and is remorseful.
He said Nakalevu is married with four children to look after and works as a grass cutter, earning about $200 a week.
The counsel also stated that Nakalevu cooperated with the police and entered a guilty plea after spending two months in remand.
Nakalevu’s 20-month sentence has been suspended for a period of five months.
Magistrate Prasad also warned him not to commit any further offences, especially given his previous convictions of a similar nature.
