A man who was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting his grand niece has been sentenced to 13 years and 2 months imprisonment by High Court Judge, Justice Riyaz Hamza.

The 53-year-old man was charged with two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault and the girl was between the age of 10 to 11 years during the time of the offences.

The incidents happened between 2018 and last year in Nasinu.

While sentencing the man, Justice Hamza says the man committed the offences in the girl’s own home where she should have felt safe.

The Judge also says the impact of the crime on the girl was extremely traumatic and is said to be continuing.

Justice Hamza adds the man exposed the innocent mind of a child to sexual activity at such a tender age and thereby robbed her of innocence.

A non-parole period of 10 years and 2 months has been set.
