The man who allegedly attempted to set fire to the Totogo Police Station last month has been remanded in custody and the matter has been transferred to the Suva High Court.

Sebastian Sipeli Kavaia Rakai is charged with one count of attempt to commit arson, two counts of damaging property and one count of criminal intimidation.

It is also alleged that Rakai without lawful excuse on the 21st of September 2023 threatened 5 police officers by throwing a beer bottle filled with benzene and walked towards them with a hammer with the intent to cause alarm to the officers.

He allegedly attempted to set fire to the Totogo Police Station on the same day and willfully and unlawfully damaged the GSM Home Phone(police Vodafix phone) valued at $49 and Police Landline telephone valued at $41.80 - both properties of the Fiji Police Force.

Rakai’s counsel, Severo Ravu made an application that his client be remanded at Saint Giles Hospital as he is undertaking medication and has a review at the hospital later this month.

Ravu says his client had already missed some rounds of medication while being in the custody of the Fiji Police Force.

Magistrate Krishnan Prasad ordered that Rakai be held at the Suva Remand Centre while Saint Giles Hospital would provide him with medical assistance.

The matter has been adjourned to the 30th of this month.
