A 42-year-old man who raped and assaulted his wife in Namosi last year has been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment by High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo.

Justice Temo started the sentence at 10 years but 1 year 5 months was deducted for time served in remand and 1 year, 7 months for being a first offender.

The incident occurred on 14th March last year.

He was charged with a count each of rape and assault causing actual bodily harm.

While sentencing the man Justice Temo said the victim's mother-in-law was speaking ill of her which resulted in fights between the victim and her husband.

He told the court that when the couple had married, they had agreed to live in harmony and support each other. The court was also told that the rapist and the 41-year-old woman have 4 children together who are between the ages of 11 and 16.

The Judge said it was the ultimate breach of trust for the man to rape and assault his wife.

Justice Temo has issued a permanent Domestic Violence Restraining Order against the man for the safety of the complainant.

He can apply for parole after serving 5 years in prison.

The man has 30 days to appeal his sentencing.
