A 41-year-old man has died after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a cane harvester in the opposite lane along the Queens Highway near Malamala, Nadi.

Police say the man allegedly lost control of his vehicle causing it to veer onto the opposite lane and crash into a cane harvester at around 8pm yesterday.

Officers from the National Fire Authority had to retrieve the victim from the car and he was rushed to the Nadi Hospital but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.

Police say a post mortem examination will be conducted to confirm the cause of death as investigations continue.

Police is urging drivers to drive with caution particularly during the current weather spell.

They say visibility will be poor so necessary safety precautionary measures should be adopted at all times.

The road death toll currently stands at 56 compared to 21 for the same period last year.
