The lawyer for a man charged with allegedly raping and sexually assaulting his stepdaughter in Samabula told the High Court today that his client had received a phone call from someone claiming to work at the High Court Registry telling him to pay $4,000 and his file would disappear.

The case was called today before High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar.

The court was told the accused immediately consulted with his lawyer and two people were arrested with the help of Police.

The two did not work at the High Court Registry and Justice Goundar said the accused had been the target of a scam however it had nothing to do with the present case.

The 44 year old has pleaded not guilty to raping and sexually assaulting his stepdaughter who is now 18 years old.

The alleged offences happened between 2016 and last year.

He is charged with one count each of rape and indecent assault.

The man is on bail and the pre-trial conference will be on the 4th of September, 2020.
