A man in his 30s has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a series of sacrilege cases in Nadi.

Police say the arrest was carried out by the Western Division Taskforce, with several religious statues believed to have been stolen recovered from the suspect.

The man is currently being questioned as investigations continue.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has again stressed that the incidents are not driven by political motives.

He says the incidents are generally driven by financial motives, internal disagreements among members or youths, or misconduct by juveniles.

In a separate incident in Sawani, Nausori, five juveniles aged 15 and 17 years were questioned under caution, in the presence of their parents, after allegedly throwing stones at a temple earlier this week.

Police say the juveniles claimed that, while walking past on the night of the incident, they threw stones that landed on the roof of the temple.

The investigation file is being finalised and will be forwarded to the Divisional Crime Officer, who will seek guidance from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on how to proceed.
