Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran urged students in Levuka to make the right choice every day—starting with saying no to harmful substances such as junk food, cigarettes, alcohol and drugs.
While speaking at the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Levuka Public Secondary School, Kiran highlighted that building self-discipline and learning to say "no" is the first step towards a healthy, successful life.
She says their choice matters, and saying no to things that are not good for their life.
She adds that this includes what they put into their body and what they share online.
The Minister stressed never to share nude photos as what goes online, stays online and can affect their future.
Kiran also spoke about the challenges of adolescence, particularly the pressure to fit in and encouraged students to choose friends who support and protect one another.
She reminded students that it is okay to ask for help and to reach out to teachers, counsellors or family members when needed.
The Minister says if you make a mistake or feel overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to speak up.
She told the students that they are not alone and there are toll-free helplines - the Child Help Line 1325, the Domestic Violence Help Line 1560 and the Empower Pacific Help Line 5626 which are ready to listen and help.
Kiran warned about the dangers of drug use, noting its serious impact on a person’s mental and physical health, education, and future goals.
She called on students to take a stand and reject drugs.
She also encouraged students to get involved in positive community activities, saying that volunteering and staying active help build confidence and reduce time spent on negative influences.
Kiran says they are here for them—to support them in achieving their dreams and living a full life.
The Minister also toured the students' displays and class presentations, commending them for their awareness, creativity and strong messages against drug abuse.
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed globally on June 26 to raise awareness about the dangers of illicit drugs.
