Merekeleni Ratubaka (MGM) and Serevi Tova (Nakasi) shine bright with gold in the Open Grade long-distance race

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School’s Merekeleni Ratubaka has made it a double after winning the 3,000 metres Open Girls event this morning.

Ratubaka also secured gold in the 1,500 metres event on Thursday evening.

She hails from Rabulu Village in Ra.

At just 14 years old, Ratubaka says winning gold in an open-grade event is a major achievement for her.

She adds regular road runs were helpful in her preparation for the Coca-Cola Games.

The 14-year-old also acknowledged the support of her parents and coaches for believing in her throughout the competition.

Wainimala Secondary’s Melita Marama got the silver while Thomas Baker Secondary School’s Luisa Neneyawa is taking the bronze medal to Navosa.

Serevi Tova of Nakasi High School has won gold in the Open Grade Boys 3,000 metres at the Coca-Cola Games.

Tova says this is his second year competing in the 3,000 metres.

He says last year he finished fourth, but he never lost hope, as he worked hard to win gold this year in the same event.

Tova hails from Waikete Village in Tailevu.

He also acknowledged his parents and teachers endless support throughout his preparation.

Tova also dedicated his win to his younger sister.

Namokoli Savenaca of Natabua High took the silver medal while Levuka Public School’s Waisea Volavola got the bronze.
