Residents of Lobau Village in Navua are returning to their homes after earlier floodwaters forced around 60 people to take shelter in the village hall.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Ratu Ilisoni Tabusakia says the rain had eased to light showers, allowing families to leave the evacuation centre and begin cleaning their houses.
He notes that homes closer to the sea were most affected and that the last significant flooding in the village occurred in 2020.
Nakavu and Raiwaqa Road were also impacted by the rising waters, which disrupted daily life for residents in low-lying areas.
A heavy rain alert remains in force for the Eastern half of Viti Levu—including Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, Serua and Namosi—the Northern Division, the Yasawa and Lomaiviti groups, Lau, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.
The Nadi Weather Office says a trough of low pressure lies over the eastern parts of the group and is expected to gradually strengthen tomorrow, with associated cloud and rain affecting parts of the country until then.
Possible impacts include flash flooding of flood-prone settlements and communities, businesses, and Irish crossings, potentially causing traffic disruptions.
Surface flooding on streets with poor drainage is also likely, alongside wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours, which increases the risk of road accidents.
