A concerned parent in Lautoka has called for moral values to be taught to children starting from Year 1, saying it is crucial for developing positive behaviour.
Speaking during the Education Act 1966 review consultation held in Lautoka, the parent says that instilling values from an early age will contribute towards a better future.
She is urging the Fiji Government to look at some other governments to adopt this initiative.
The parent says a friend living in Japan noticed an improvement in her children's behaviour as the schools focus on teaching good values in the early stages of life.
She stressed that discipline begins at home and should not be left only on the shoulders of the teachers.
She says parents' negligence increases because teachers are expected to do everything.
The parent says both parties should be meeting fortnightly to discuss the problems.
While responding to her, a Ministry of Education representative says it is a good suggestion and they will be taking notes on this.
He says that in Japan, students focus on culture and values until they reach Year 4.
He adds that adopting a similar approach in Fiji could play a significant role in shaping a child's character.
The public consultation of the review of the Education Act 1966 will continue in Sigatoka tomorrow.
