The Land Transport Authority is urging the public to refrain from splashing water on moving vehicles during New Year’s Day celebrations, highlighting the significant risks this activity poses to road safety.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa says the practice of splashing water on vehicles, especially during festive occasions, has unfortunately become a common part of celebrations.

He further says it may seem like a playful activity, but the reality is that it can have severe consequences, endangering the lives of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

Rokosawa says road safety is a shared responsibility, and we all have a part to play in ensuring our roads are safe during the festive season and beyond.

The CEO says many incidents involve children and youths.

He calls on parents and guardians to monitor their children closely during this festive period.

He adds that another concern is children crossing roads carelessly after splashing water, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

He says this increases the likelihood of accidents, as they often fail to notice approaching vehicles.

Rokosawa says prevention is always better than cure and parents and guardians must take responsibility for ensuring their children’s safety, especially on our roads.

He says the LTA is working with the Fiji Police Force to enforce road safety measures during New Year’s Day festivities.

He adds their goal is to ensure that all road users can travel safely, without fear of unnecessary hazards created by irresponsible roadside behaviour.

Members of the public are encouraged to report irresponsible driving behaviours via LTA’s complaints platforms, including texting 582, emailing help@lta.com.fj or complaints@lta.com.fj, or calling 3392166. Complaints can also be filed via the LTA live chat service on their website.
