The Land Transport Authority reaffirms its commitment to saving lives and improving road safety, following concerns about the visibility and use of portable speed cameras across Fiji.
This follows a Facebook post by MP Ketan Lal, who criticized the Authority for allegedly hiding portable speed cameras under leaves and bushes to trap motorists.
Lal says this is absolutely disgraceful and unacceptable, adding that the LTA’s main role should be to create awareness, educate drivers, and make roads safer not ambush motorists for fines. In response, LTA says Fiji has recorded 58 road deaths so far this year, up from 44 last year, with 35 fatalities caused by speeding.
The Authority emphasizes that each loss represents families and communities suffering avoidable tragedy.
LTA highlights that the cameras are strategically placed in high-risk areas, including school zones and accident-prone roads, to deter speeding and protect lives. It has also raised concerns about drivers sharing camera locations online, noting that temporary slowdowns defeat the purpose of road safety.
LTA says drivers must obey speed limits at all times and safe driving should be the norm, not the exception.
The Authority adds that it will continue working with the Fiji Police Force and other partners to strengthen education, enforcement, and advocacy.
LTA says these joint initiatives aim to change driver attitudes, reduce road trauma, and protect every road user.
The Authority urges all drivers to drive responsibly, reminding them that every life lost is one too many.
