Flying Fijians defeat Japan 41-17 to defend Pacific Nations Cup title

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians have defended the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup title after a commanding 41-17 win over Japan in the final tonight.

It was a highly intense game in the first 40 minutes but Fiji managed to pull away in the second half to claim the win.

Japan scored the first points of the match with a converted penalty by fullback Seungsin Lee in the 6th minute before Fiji’s Caleb Muntz levelled the score at 3-all in the 9th minute.

The home side continued to pressure Fiji and scored a converted try through centre Dylan Riley in the 19th minute from inside their own half to give them a 10-3 lead.

In the 33rd minute, Fiji’s Vuate Karawalevu scored a brilliant try with Muntz adding the conversion to lock the score at 10-all which was the score at the break.

Muntz put Fiji in the lead for the first time in the game with a penalty kick at goal in the 56th minute before debutant and Olympic silver medallist Ponipate Loganimasi scored a converted try to extend their lead to 20-10.

Fiji scored three more converted tries through Albert Tuisue, Karawalevu and Loganimasi while Japan scored a converted try in the last 14 minutes of the match for the final result.
