The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has reaffirmed its commitment to healthcare and humanitarian aid in Fiji by funding open-heart surgeries for two children at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital, both of whom were successfully discharged today.
Speaking to fijivillage News, President of the Pacific Area of the LDS Church, Elder Taniela Wakolo says it was an emotional experience witnessing lives being transformed through the free services offered by the hospital.
Elder Wakolo says that when he first came to the hospital two years ago, he was amazed at how the hospital did not have a billing station, and that everything is done for free.
He adds that families from across Fiji as well as from Pacific countries such as Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Kiribati, have benefited from the hospital’s services without paying a single cent.
He says the Church, which has been a key partner of the hospital, has supported its work through donations of critical medical equipment including a sterilizing machine, portable diagnostic tools, and most recently, an echo machine, with over 40,000 screenings done.
He also says that the Church’s ongoing work in Fiji went beyond children’s hospital as well, by providing support to CWM Hospital, rural dispensaries, and schools across the country.
