Tevita Kunawave's friend who was was with him on the day Kunawave allegedly murdered his 4 months old baby has told the Suva High Court that he did not see Kunawave picking up the concrete block and throwing it inside.

Former soldier, Kunawave is charged with a count of murder for allegedly killing his baby in October last year by throwing a concrete block through the window that hit the baby’s forehead.

Joeli Vulavu has told the court that he grew up with Kunawave and also worked together as engineers for RFMF.

Vulavu said he was drinking with Kunawave from the previous night to the day of the incident.

He confirmed to the court that they were drinking alcohol on the front porch and that the front door of the house was locked.

He said he saw him pull the mesh on the window and enter the house and heard Kunawave’s wife shouting and crying as he was hitting her.

When asked by defence lawyer, Thomas Lee, Vulavu told the court that he just sat there.

He also said that it did not occur to him to call the police as he was drinking alcohol.

Vulavu also told the court that he does not recall Kunawave lifting the concrete block and throwing it inside.

He said he was drunk and dozing off during the incident.

The man also said that he got a shock when he saw Kunawave’s wife running outside followed by his friend who was holding the baby.

He told the court that he only saw that concrete block outside the house on the porch after the alleged incident.

Vulavu said he stayed at the house until the Military Police arrested him that afternoon.

The trial continues in the Suva High Court today.
