Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has withdrawn his support from the Opposition Group of 15 led by the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu.
In a facebook post, Lal says this step has not come lightly, but he believes it is necessary to remain true to his values, including integrity, fairness and independent thinking as a servant of the people.
He says he has formally written to the Speaker of Parliament on the 11th of this month to officially communicate this decision.
Lal has expressed his gratitude to the MPs of the G15 Group for the experiences they have shared, the lessons they have learned, and the support they have offered during their time together.
The MP has also stepped down from the roles of Deputy Whip and Shadow Minister for Justice.
Lal says he will remain firmly on the opposition bench and will now serve as a lone independent opposition MP, guided not by any group but by the voices of the people.
Lal further says for him, politics is not about positions or power, it’s about the people.
He adds that dignity in leadership is not earned through titles but through actions and believes that natural justice, fairness, and respect must remain the cornerstones of democracy.
