Vodafone Fijiana XVs outside centre Josivini Neihamu has been named as one of the nominees for the prestigious World Rugby Women’s 15s Breakthrough Player of the Year award and she is joined by New Zealanders Jorga Miller and Brexton Sorensen McGee on the shortlist.
Originally from Vagadra Village in Nadroga, Neihamu began her rugby journey in 2022 with the Marist Sea-hawks 7s side before joining the Namosi Women’s Rugby team.
She made a strong impression at the Women’s Rugby World Cup, showcasing her explosive line running and scoring several key tries during crucial matches.
A former U17 winger for Swami Vivekananda College, Neihamu was inspired to pursue rugby professionally by the late women’s rugby pioneer Elenoa Kunatuba.
Kunatuba encouraged her to see rugby as a viable career path, especially with the growth of the women's game and increasing opportunities for professional contracts.
Neihamu is now a trailblazer for her community, becoming the first woman from her village to play professional rugby.
She’s also urging young girls to take up the sport not just for the love of the game, but as a way to build a rewarding future.
