With the Fiji Eighth Year Examination results out now, Empower Pacific is aware that some students performed very well and got good marks while others did not do so well and it is vital that these students learn how to deal with the disappointment of not getting the result they had desired.

Empower Pacific CEO, Patrick Morgam says learning to deal with such disappointment is possible with the support of their parents, guardians and family members.

He says one of the ways in which this can be done is by creating a safe and enabling environment where a child is able to have an open conversation with a trusted person and express his or her feelings and emotions.

Morgam says being understood and accepted has a profound effect on an individual’s life and well-being as it changes negative thoughts and feelings into a more positive one.

He say being mindful is key as it assists in realising that the overwhelming negative thoughts do not shape a person into what or who he or she isn't.

Morgam says as an organisation focusing on counselling and social work support, Empower Pacific is aware that not getting the desired result can trigger disappointment, worry about the future, guilt, self-blame, feelings of being left out and having a low self-esteem.

He says however, with the right support, these emotions can be managed positively.

Morgam says there are, however, some cases where such feelings can drive an individual into depression with more drastic outcomes such as committing or attempting to commit suicide.

He says Empower Pacific, which specialises in and is committed to providing mental health and psychosocial support encourages students who are waiting for their external exam results and guardians to remember exam results do not necessarily determine success.

He also says it is very important to remember that some of the world’s most successful people have experienced setbacks and disappointment but that did not stop them from pursuing their dreams.

The CEO says map out other options as getting a not so good result just means having a change of plan, so it is vital for students and parents to take some time, sit together and map out other beneficial options.

He says think positively, at a difficult time, it’s really important to be kind.

Morgam says we all have had times where our results didn’t really turn out the way we wanted it too but that does not mean we cannot move on and do better.

He says while it can be difficult to fulfill the family’s hopes and expectations, talking about how one feels is very important.

The CEO says reaching out for support, which can simply be talking with someone, will also encourage another person going through a similar situation to express their thoughts and feelings.

Morgam says family support and positive thinking portrayed through acts of service is vital in every way and has a huge impact on how a child views himself or herself as they shape their future.
