There are a lot of things that we do not talk about with regards to what the Girmityas went through, so it is our responsibility to remember their hardship and if a country is unable to deal with its history, it will not be able to progress.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted this while attending the Annual Marriamman Pooja in Solovi, Nadi on Saturday.

Sayed-Khaiyum says that if we talk about our history then politics comes into it too.

He says 14th May does not only mark the arrival of Girmityas into the country but it is the day of the first coup.

Sayed-Khaiyum says young people may not know if the coup was done on this day deliberately or it was just a coincidence so we must remember all this.

He says if we do not remember our history and its impact then we would not be able to decide for our future.

He adds we must all respect the elders in our society and not take them for granted.
