An inmate at the Suva Women’s Correction Centre has given birth to a baby girl and the inmate will continue breastfeeding her baby until she deems it fit for her mother to take over the care of the child.

The Fiji Corrections Service says they are committed to ensuring the welfare and health of pregnant women and mothers in prison.

They say the inmate who is a first offender, single, and was 12 weeks pregnant when admitted on January 17th this year and since her admission, appropriate measures have been taken to ensure her welfare and health during her pregnancy.

They say the inmate gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Saturday night at the CWM Hospital and they were discharged back into the Corrections Service’s care yesterday.

The Corrections Service says the nursery dorm, currently occupied by eight elderly inmates, has a designated room prepared specifically for mothers and their babies but this room is ready to welcome the mother and her newborn, with all necessary baby items provided by her family during visiting days.

The Corrections Service says they are dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of all inmates, especially those with special considerations such as pregnant women and mothers.

They add they are committed to providing a nurturing and supportive environment for both mother and child during their stay with them.
