India is celebrating Gandhi Jayanti, honouring Gandhi’s legacy and reaffirming national commitment to his ideals of non-violence, truth and unity.
The day is commemorated with tributes, prayer services, and nationwide observances, honouring Gandhi’s lasting contribution to India’s independence. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, trained as a lawyer, he became a central figure in India’s freedom struggle against British colonial rule.
According to Hindustan Times, after Gandhi’s assassination in 1948, the Government of India declared October 2 as Gandhi Jayanti to honour his legacy.
The day is marked by community services, peace marches, school events, and public awareness campaigns promoting non-violence and national unity.
