Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka

Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka confirms that he will voluntarily appear before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as the leader of the 1987 coups, and he will probably be the first to appear as it would lay the foundation of the Commission’s thought processes.

Rabuka made these comments to fijivillage News on whether he would appear before the Commission.

When asked by us, he also confirms that as part of the truth telling process, he will also reveal who was behind the 1987 coup.

When questioned on whether the process would fail if 2000 coup leader, George Speight and 2006 coup leader, Voreqe Bainimarama do not appear before the Commission, Rabuka says it will not be a pointless exercise and it will not change the outcome of the Commission as it will come and say that these are the things that they have found.

He says the nation will decide and there has also not been much consideration until now for the families of people like Rabuka and Bainimarama who were also victims of the events.

Rabuka also says the Commission has the powers to summon a person.

He says the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is funded by the European Union and all the other operations are expected to come from Australia and other donors.

Rabuka says you are just prolonging the pains and aches if the truth and reconciliation process is not undertaken.
