People of Newtown in Nasinu did not disappoint as they turned up in numbers to celebrate Jerry Tuwai’s Olympic Gold Medal win in Rio today.

Tuwai who grew up in Newtown was carried from the Newtown roundabout to Bishop Kempthorne Memorial School by the Newtown 15's rugby team.

Hundreds of fans joined the Newtown community in this celebration.

It included all the Solomon Island descendants from Wailoku, Caubati and Kalabu.

Tuwai was also accorded a full traditional ceremony at the celebration.

Speaking at the celebration, Tuwai thanked his parent's for their dedication and hard work.

He said his rugby career turned out to be the way it is because of his parent's sacrifice.

Tuwai also thanked Gold Medal winning Fiji 7s coach, Ben Ryan for realising his potential.

The celebration was also sponsored by the Nasinu Town Council and Coca‑Cola Amatil Fiji Limited.

Meanwhile, former Newtown community resident, Seru Koroiyabi came all the way from England to be part of the celebration today.
