The Highlanders edged closer to securing a Super Rugby Trans-Tasman final spot after beating the Brumbies 33-12 in Canberra last night.

The men from Dunedin got the bonus point they needed as they outscored the Brumbies five tries to two, with All Black veteran Aaron Smith scoring two and providing a couple of assists in a superb performance.

That should be enough to see the Highlanders through to the final, although wins for the Blues and Crusaders tonight could still see them miss out, depending on the margins of victory.

In other results from last night, the Hurricanes defeated the Reds 43-14.

Meanwhile, the Rebels will host the Crusaders at 4.35 this afternoon, the Blues will face the Western Force at 7.05 tonight and the Chiefs will take on the Waratahs at 9.45 tonight.
