The Ministry of Health has a surveillance system to look at the trends of infectious diseases, specifically looking at respiratory infections, including the various COVID-19 variants.

The Head of Health Protection at the Ministry of Health, Dr Aalisha Sahukhan, says with the surveillance system, they can tell if we have a high level of respiratory infections or a low level.

Dr. Sahukhan says this infectious disease can also be seasonal because in Fiji, influenza is seasonal, and they are also monitoring it.

She says as we are into the rainy season, other diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever are on the rise, and we need to take precautions as well.
