To combat the ongoing crisis of HIV cases in the country, the Health Ministry has now established the HIV Sexual Reproductive Health Unit, that will take the lead in the fight against this disease.

The new unit will be headed by Dr Jason Mitchell.

The announcement was made today by Minister for Health, Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, who says the number of new cases of HIV continues to escalate significantly each month at a speed we have never witnessed before in Fiji.

He says we will have to work together and in partnership with our communities to tackle this significant health challenge of our time.

Dr Lalabalavu says he has presented this to the leaders in government and is greatly encouraged by the support expressed by Cabinet Ministers.

The Minister adds he also recognises the need to respond decisively to the growing HIV epidemic.

Dr Lalabalavu says he is confident that we will rise to the challenge and protect the health and well-being of all Fijians.
