The Ministry of Health is urging the public to remain vigilant and continue taking precautionary measures against dengue fever, despite the outbreak in the Western and Central Divisions being officially declared over.
The Ministry says they had declared an outbreak on the 13th of February for the Western Division and the 11th of April for the Central Division this year.
They say case numbers have since declined, but warn that dengue remains endemic in Fiji, meaning cases can still occur outside outbreak periods.
They further say that a total of 11,599 cases of dengue were reported throughout Fiji between January 1st and July 27th.
Of these, 5,124 cases were reported in the Western Division, 2,957 in the Central Division, 3,198 in the Northern Division, and 320 in the Eastern Division.
The Ministry highlighted that recent weeks have seen a significant drop in cases.
In response to this year’s outbreak, the Ministry’s health teams worked with other ministries to carry out an integrated public health campaign.
This included spraying to kill adult mosquitoes, applying larvicides to eradicate mosquito larvae, house-to-house surveillance and cleanup of breeding sites, site inspections, abatement notices, and fines for mosquito-infested properties
The Ministry says preventive measures are ongoing in all divisions to curb the spread of dengue fever.
