President Ratu Williame Katonivere says Fiji Rice Limited has reached its projected five-year goal to contribute 60 percent to Fiji’s rice market in place of the current 20 percent it serves despite being an off-season alternative crop.

Ratu Wiliame highlighted this during officiating the Presidents Awards for Rice Farmers at the Fiji Football Academy in Labasa.

He says through the hard work of award recipients, opportunities were created to allow diversification of their products.

Farmers, investors and respective stakeholders were recognized for their contributions in ensuring that Fiji’s rice industry continues to succeed.

He says there is support for rice farmers and the industry to produce quality rice, supply to competitive markets and sell to at a competitive cost.

He adds the award recognises the efforts of the farmers in the rice industry as it is one of the staple foods in Fiji.
