Grave plots used as drop-off points for prohibited items

As the general cleaning and maintenance of grave plots are conducted across all cemeteries under the Fiji Corrections Service, it has been noted that some grave plots have been misused as drop-off points for prohibited items.

The Corrections Service says these prohibited items are later collected by inmates during labour programs where materials such as cloth, tapa and temporary shelters have been used to mark these locations.

They say that during the cleaning process, they have encountered a range of reactions from the public.

The Corrections Service highlighted that they understand and respect families’ sentiments and seek their cooperation and understanding, as this exercise is necessary for important reasons — particularly to uphold public safety and security within these sacred grounds.

They have reminded the public that only items approved for placement on grave plots are those that are part of the standard grave plan issued by the Corrections Cemetery Office.

They add that any additional or unauthorised materials will be removed as part of the general cleaning process.
