Women in the Western Division are being encouraged to take advantage of free Human Papillomavirus or HPV screening as efforts continue to improve the prevention and early detection of cervical cancer.
HPV testing is currently underway at BlackRock in Votualevu, Nadi, for women aged between 30 and 59 years.
Principal Medical Officer at Nadi Maternity Dr Lice Vaniqi says the programme uses a self-collection method, giving women a more private and comfortable screening option.
She says results are available quickly, allowing women who test positive to receive appropriate follow-up care and treatment.
Dr Vaniqi says cervical cancer can develop without obvious symptoms in its early stages, making screening important even for women who feel healthy.
The screening is free and will continue to be rolled out, while families are being encouraged to support eligible women to get tested.
Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Penioni Ravunawa says cooperation across Government is helping maintain health services and improve access to care.
He says the initiative demonstrates how shared resources can improve continuity of services and access to healthcare.
The expansion of HPV screening is part of efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare and improve the early detection of cervical cancer.
