The Suva Grammar School Ex-Scholars Association 80s decade

The Suva Grammar School Ex-Scholars Association 80s decade has successfully raised $10,000 for the school’s 65th Blue Sapphire anniversary celebrations next week.

The 80s decade will also lead a clean-up and planting initiative at the School’s pool area on Monday, 8th September, to mark the 65th anniversary, showing their commitment to giving back to the school.

Meanwhile, the funds were collected through a Kava Barrel and Quiz Night organised by the 80s decade committee.

While speaking on the clean up, the Association says the Suva Grammar School pool has been abandoned and not in use for over 20 years, despite previous government commitments to fix and restore it.

They say the activity will involve cutting grass, water blasting the stairs and cement paths, and restoring the pool surrounds as the first step, and push towards reviving the facility.

80’s Decade Association President Kasanita Keteca says efforts towards their fundraising events began in March this year and kickstarted with a meeting of year representatives to brainstorm ideas.

She says that while the Kava Barrel was the most popular suggestion, the team decided to add a Quiz Night component to make the event more interactive and enjoyable.

Keteca says the initiative was a resounding success, and the $10,000 raised was transferred to the Association on 15th August 2025.

She adds this achievement reflects the teamwork and commitment of the 80s decade, as it was about more than just raising money—it was about reconnecting, celebrating their Grammar spirit, and contributing to both the legacy and facilities of their school.

80s Decade representative to the Executive Committee, Vela Bale says their decade wanted to go beyond just raising funds, and by starting with the school clean-up, they hope to set an example and encourage other decades to buy into long-term projects that restore pride in their school environment.

Bale says they saw the success and effectiveness of the school gym project last year and look forward to the growth of the Digital Grammar project that they hope will make a transformative difference.

The Association says the 80s decade extends its gratitude to all who supported their events and looks forward to continuing the celebrations leading up to the Blue Sapphire Reunion Ball on Saturday, 13th September.

The Suva Grammar 65th Blue Sapphire anniversary celebrations will begin with a Thanksgiving Church Service at 4pm this Sunday at the School Hall.
