Govt needs to throw in a bit more money to fix the health system - Seruiratu

Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu says the health system is going to be something that the government needs to work on and throw a bit more money to improve it.

He highlighted this while responding to questions by fijivillage News on Opposition MP Jone Usamate’s comments during a press conference about judging the performance of the current government by comparing it to the previous government and the state of the facilities at the CWM Hospital where there are continuing issues such as broken doors, the state of the Maternity and Children’s Ward and water issues in the Maternity Ward.

Seruiratu says the CWM Hospital is an old facility, we need a bigger hospital and everybody knows it runs out of beds.

He says they are extending the facilities in Makoi and other facilities so that they can move people out of CWM Hospital.

The Opposition Leader also says any government that comes in should continue to the next level, because not every government will address the problem.

He also highlighted that people steal from the hospital where even starters for tubelights have been stolen.

Usamate says the health system should be judged by the right indicators where he highlighted the decrease in child mortality rate.

Usamate says current issues will continue to be a challenge and a lot of it is legacy issues in terms of piping and non-revenue water.

The MP says they have additional problems that they need to deal with, particularly in the Suva to Naurori area where the influx of people is very high.

He says that means, if you have a fixed amount of money, you have to decide, if it is going to be used just to get rid of the old piping or also use a significant portion of this money for the new people that are coming in that need access to the water.
