Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad has assured sugarcane farmers in Tavua that the government is committed to improving the railway system used for transporting cane.

This follows concerns raised by farmers in Tavua that the Fiji Sugar Corporation was planning to shut down the railway line between Tavua and the Rarawai Mill.

While responding to concerns raised about the railway cartage system, Professor Prasad confirms to fijivillage News that discussions have taken place with the Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh and the FSC Board.

He stressed that both the government and FSC are aligned in their commitment to repair and improve the rail network in cane-growing areas.

The Deputy Prime Minister further says that the reinstatement and enhancement of the rail system will support increased production, and reassured Tavua farmers that the network will remain available for use this season.

He adds that any necessary repairs will be carried out as quickly as possible.
