Education Minister Rosy Akbar

Education Minister Rosy Akbar says the free bus fare scheme will continue and parents who are going through a financial crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic can also apply for the scheme.

Akbar says 82 schools throughout the country have been affected by TC Harold and they have been working closely with school management and the community in the rehabilitation process.

She says for those parents who are facing a financial crisis, they can apply for the Unemployment Benefit Scheme that was clarified by the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and they can further provide any information on assistance after school resumes.

The Minister says for students who have lost everything during TC Harold they will be assisted.

She says one of the battles they are currently facing is the damages of school due to Tropical Cyclone Harold and they are working hard to provide a learning environment for students when all classes resume.

Akbar says they have tried to repair the schools however in terms of Richmond High School and Kadavu Provincial Secondary School, they are still working with the Construction Implementation Unit and the Ministry of Economy.

She says they are trying to ensure that when school resumes for all classes, there is a learning space or shelter in place so there is a learning environment provided for the students.

The Minister also highlighted that term 2 of school will begin on the 30th of June to the 18th of September while term three will be from the 28th of September to the 18th of December.

Akbar reiterated that only Year 12 and 13 students will sit for external examinations while other levels will undergo school-based assessments.

Classes for Year 12 and 13 will resume on the 30th of June while the rest of the primary and secondary school students, as well as early childhood education, will open one week later, on Monday - 6th July.

All school teachers are to report to their schools on the 29th of June.
