Acting CEO of Walesi Shivnesh Prasad has today made it clear that the free Walesi WiFi hotspots in different parts of the country are filtered for adverse content including pornography.

Prasad says the filtering is enabled at the communications hub itself and it is not enabled on devices of the users but rather centrally controlled by Walesi’s switches.

Prasad clarified this after SODELPA candidate Lynda Tabuya said last night that the access of free internet by this government which is free wifi is irresponsible.

Tabuya made this comment on our talkback show - Straight Talk with our News Director Vijay Narayan last night which also featured NFP’s Seni Nabou and FijiFirst Candidate Premila Kumar.

Tabuya made this comment while expressing her view on sex education in schools.

Tabuya says the digital age is here so our children can access any kind of material that is inappropriate on the internet.

The SODELPA Candidate says that they will not remove the free wifi hotspots that have been launched but they will move it to appropriate locations.

FijiFirst Candidate Premila Kumar upon Tabuya’s concern on the free wifi, questioned her as to how she will be monitoring the small internet shops and cafes that are running and providing free internet.

While expressing her view on sex education in schools, NFP’s Seni Nabou says that she wants to see parents being actively involved in school and agree that their child should be taught this.

Nabou says it’s not something for the government to say that sex education tomorrow as she believes that it just does not work that way.

Meanwhile, Premila Kumar says sex education is already being taught in Fiji.
