Fix our payment gateways so local businesses can sell online - Sekiguchi

Please fix our payment gateways so that local businesses can go online and sell.

Greenhouse Coworking founder Maria Sekiguchi highlighted this during a panel discussion at the 2024 FNU National Conference on Information Technology at the Pearl Resort today.

Sekiguchi says this is an issue small entrepreneurs have been facing for years adding she is sure in the hospitality business small operators have to go through other booking online systems.

The founder asks why can’t they just do it on their phones.

Fellow panelist and tech startup genius Shenal Harakh says overseas they use Stripe when they need to develop a payment gateway and it’s available in 135 countries of which Fiji is not one.

Harakh says the IT industry in Fiji is seen as very technical, siloed and distant.

She says IT is not here to simply serve clients but to exist fluidly with the way the world works.

Harakh says another way to bring down walls is to understand how IT affects everything else.

Harakh says in an earlier discussion, watching porn was brought up and how difficult it is to regulate the sites that people go on.
