Fijians to get funding through TSLS to study under a PhD programme at University of Newcastle

Fijians who wish to study under a PhD programmes at the University of Newcastle in Australia will now be able to get funding through the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service as TSLS has signed Memorandum of Understanding with the university.

TSLS says this collaboration will enhance the human capacity and contribute towards socio-economic solutions in Fiji.

TSLS Board Chairperson, Ro Teimumu Kepa says the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is a significant step as the University of Newcastle’s commitment will provide support to the Fiji Government through the cost sharing initiative.

She says for the 2025 academic year, the Fiji Government has established a new scheme for PhD and Masters cost sharing with Australian universities.

Ro Teimumu says the University of Newcastle will cover the full tuition fee for a total of five eligible Fiji citizens and the Fiji Government will cover the cost of Overseas Insurance Health Cover, Airfares, Stipend.

Fiji, as a Pacific Island Country welcomes University of Newcastle’s Pacific strategy.

University of Newcastle’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky says the partnership between University of Newcastle and TSLS is a shining example of how collaborative efforts can drive the academic and research success.

Professor Alex Zelinsky says they are pleased with the collaboration with TSLS which enables more students to study at their university.

He says the PhD Scholarship programme supported by tuition fee waivers is a critical component of this partnership, enabling scholars to pursue important research projects.
