Fiji, as a vulnerable Pacific Island country deeply feels the impacts of climate change.

Chair and Director for the Asian Productivity Organisation, Maritino Nemani, highlighted this during the Green Productivity 2.0 Council Meeting held in Osaka, Japan.

He says Fiji remains committed to contributing to the development and implementation of GP 2.0, which is a solutions-based and action-oriented model that enables stakeholders to take concrete steps towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and national emission targets.

The Chair says as a leading nation among Pacific Island countries, Fiji has a responsibility to promote and implement sustainable practices — not only within its own borders and among other APO member countries, but also across Pacific Island nations that are not yet members of the APO.

Fiji became a member of the GP 2.0 Council following an invitation extended by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the 65th Workshop Meeting of Heads of National Productivity Organisations, which was hosted by Fiji in October 2024.

Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Honourable Agni Deo Singh, acknowledged the invitation extended to Fiji, saying it represented a significant step in the country’s commitment to sustainable development.

He says Fiji understands green productivity is key to economic growth, particularly in agriculture.

He says the principles of Green Productivity 2.0 would inspire people to improve their farming methods, leading to greater efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and improved livelihoods for farmers.

He further says that the country is dedicated to finding innovative solutions and investing in research and development to ensure that its growth is both economically viable and environmentally sustainable, leaving a positive legacy for future generations.
