The Fiji Maritime Surveillance Rescue Coordination Centre received an alert from the Maritime Rescue Centre Germany alerted them to a distress regarding a sailing yacht SY FINDUS.

The Rescue Centre has confirmed that the occupants of the yacht reported that a school of whales attacked their yacht resulting in damage to their propeller.

It says the yacht is within the Fiji Search and Rescue Region, and they are now coordinating the case and are in communication with the occupants of the yacht.

The yacht is in the Lau waters and both occupants are safe and uninjured but are concerned for their safety due to the close proximity of whales at their current location.

The Fiji Maritime Surveillance Rescue Coordination Centre has confirmed that they will continue to monitor the situation.
