Students and teachers of Wailotua District School in Wainibuka, Tailevu, now have safer and easier access to their school following the handover of a new walkway by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mosese Bulitavu.
The government, through the Ministry's Community Access Roads, Footpaths and Footbridges (CARFF) Programme, invested more than $46,000 to construct an 80-metre walkway with sheds and railings, as well as a 30-metre driveway fitted with solar lights.
The project will directly benefit 137 students, five teachers, and the wider school community by providing safer access during wet weather and at night.
For the Wailotua community, the project marks a significant milestone, as students previously relied on a difficult and often slippery track to reach their classrooms.
The new walkway and driveway will help create a safer learning environment while encouraging regular school attendance and supporting the long-term development of the community.
Bulitavu says the development reflects the Government’s commitment to addressing the real needs of rural communities through projects that improve safety, accessibility, and education outcomes.
